How to Protect Your Skin During Winter

Winter can be harsh on our skin, especially on exposed areas like the hands and face. Low humidity and cold winds can dry your skin, making it crack and bleed. So what can you do to protect your skin and keep it smooth and healthy? Here are some ideas.

Cover Up

Always make sure you cover up exposed areas of skin during the cold winter months. Wear warm gloves to protect your hands, a cosy hat to protect your head and ears and a scarf to keep your neck covered. This can protect you from the worst of the damage caused by the cold.

Stay Hydrated

Make sure you drink plenty of fluids. It’s easy to become dehydrated during the winter, and you may drink less water during the colder months, but your skin needs to be hydrated from the inside.

Eat foods with high water content, including lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Soup can be a good option during the winter, and consider reducing the amount of alcohol you drink.

Don’t Get Too Hot

It’s tempting to have a hot shower or bath in the winter. But if the water is too hot, this can actually dehydrate the skin, which can cause damage. So have a warm shower, but don’t make it too hot.

Also, be wary of turning the heating up too high in your home because this can also cause your skin to become dry.

Use a Humidifier

Consider using a humidifier as well to prevent the air from becoming too dry in your home. When the thermostat is turned up too hot, the air can become dry, and this can affect your skin and cause drying and discomfort. A humidifier can help to counteract this effect.

Use a Gentle Cleanser

Use a spot clearing gel that is gentle and kind to your skin. This is good at any time of year, but it’s especially important during colder times of the year. Cleansers can dry the skin out. If yours is too harsh, choose one that is more hydrating with natural ingredients.

Use Moisturiser After Washing

Whenever you wash your skin, add some gentle moisturiser straight after you wash. That way, it will help to seal the moisture in. You should also apply it before you go to bed, especially to dryer areas like elbows and knees.

Try a Face Mask

Face masks can be an excellent way to keep your skin healthy. You can make one yourself by using natural and soothing ingredients like yoghurt and olive oil. There are lots of natural DIY recipes you can follow.

Avoid Over Washing Your Hair

Try to avoid washing your hair every day during the winter. When you shampoo your hair, it can strip away the natural oils that moisturise your scalp. So try to get into the habit of washing your hair every other day during the winter.

Protect Your Skin from the Sun

Don’t forget to protect your skin from the sun as well, and make sure you apply sunscreen. It may sound strange, but the sun’s UV rays can still damage your skin. This is especially important when there is snow on the ground, which can reflect the sun’s rays.

Protect Your Skin This Winter

Treat your skin properly this winter by following the tips above. Dry and itchy skin can be very annoying during the winter months, but by following some simple tips, you can help to keep your skin in better health to get you through the winter with fewer problems.
