How To Find The Perfect Skin Care Routine For Your Skin Type?

How to find the perfect skin care routine for your skin type

Understanding the perfect routine for your skin type is the secret to healthy and bright looking skin.

DNA ultimately dictates how your biggest organ reacts to the environment, hormones and of course, your lifestyle. Then there’s having to wade through all the differing opinions on what’s best for your skin!

So, what is your skin type? Oily, acne-prone, combination or sensitive?

Caring for your skin doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and neither does nailing down a daily routine!

Let’s take a look at what you can do to achieve your best skin:

Oily and acne-prone skin

An overproduction of sebum (oil) causes oily and shiny skin. Skin can appear red, inflamed and appear scarred.

Small skin lesions or inflammations occur when your oil or sebaceous glands become infected and full of puss. You might know them more as spots! Usually appearing across your face, chest or back, spots can form as whiteheads, blackheads or cysts which can lead to scarring.

Finding a skincare product which can deep-clean blocked pores like salicylic acid or a skin brightening product that contains lactic, mandelic, or glycolic acid will help your skin’s appearance.

For a milder treatment that doesn’t strip your skin, Cloud 9’s spot clearing gel ‘Clarity’ is worth a look. Not only will it sooth sore facial areas, but it will also reduce redness and inflammation caused by acne.

Let’s keep it simple!

In the morning:

  1. Use a cleanser to remove dirt and debris
  2. Apply a Vitamin-C rich serum
  3. Exfoliate
  4. Apply sunscreen with an SPF30+

Before bed:

  1. Apply a cleanser that is enriched with salicylic acid or with exfoliating action. And repeat to remove the extra buildup of pollutants, makeup and dirt from your day!
  2. Apply an overnight serum

Sensitive skin

Reactive and often experiencing a burning or stinging sensation, having sensitive skin is a bugbear for most.

Sometimes sensitive skin can be the result of over-exfoliation or other environmental factors. It can also be the result of an underlying skin condition like eczema, dermatitis or rosacea. Whatever the cause, dealing with scaling skin or redness can be more than just skin irritation.

Sensitive skin requires simple skincare. So, strip it all back to basics.

Restoring your skin barrier with moisturisers teaming with fatty acids and ceramides will help replenish your skin’s lipid layer. You will also need to focus on products that can help your skin to retain moisture too. So keep an eye out for products that contain glycerin and hyaluronic acid.

Remember, strip it down to the basics!

In the morning:

  1. Apply a gentle cleanser with soft cotton wool in a sweeping circular motion
  2. Use a moisturiser – the more natural the ingredients, the better
  3. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen before you go out the door – perfume-free is best

Before bed:

  1. Apply a soothing cleanser
  2. Moisturise just like you did earlier in the day
  3. Apply on overnight serum – locking in all that incredible moisture

Combination skin

Like all things, there is always a skin type that stands out amongst the rest, and that is the most common Combination skin.

With the fewest problems, skin tends not to be too dry or oily. There is little flakiness or shine. However, you may experience a slight build-up of oil across your T-zone. The winter months may bring drier skin, but otherwise, your skin is mostly on point.

What’s more, products rarely cause flareups, redness or soreness. So, the skincare world really is your oyster on the combination skin front.

You can still keep your daily skincare routine simple though!

Count your blessings, and apply your skincare products as you mean to go on! Using products with naturally derived ingredients that won’t cause damage to your skin barrier is recommended.

In the morning:

  1. Apply a cleanser in soft sweeping motions
  2. Use a Vitamin-C rich serum
  3. Apply a non-comedogenic moisturiser
  4. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen with a high SPF

Before bed:

  1. Double cleanse with a foaming gel cleanser
  2. Exfoliate – follow this step every now and then (up to two times a week)
  3. Apply an overnight serum
  4. Moisturise or apply a nourishing mask like ‘Good Night’

Before you go

The best way to tackle any skin condition or maintain healthy skin is to tend to it regularly. So, make sure you stick to your daily skincare routine.

Using products that are relevant to your skin type and with as many naturally derived ingredients as possible will help you to like what you see in the mirror.
